Early metal coloring in glass

I've got to give a shoutout to Bob Snodgrass for his work with silver fuming and color-changing glass. But a friend of mine brought up a lesser-known artist from the 1950s who played around with metal oxides to create color effects in glass. He kept his techniques a secret, which is why his work isn't widely recognized.

It's fascinating to think that metal coloring wasn't exactly a new concept, it was just less documented prior to Snodgrass's contributions. It's interesting how certain techniques end up getting rediscovered or developed by different people over time.

Has anyone else come across early glass innovators like this?
 
This is an intriguing point about innovators rediscovering similar chemical principles. It brings to mind Louis Comfort Tiffany's work with Favrile glass back in the 1890s, where he used vaporized metals and oxides for those iridescent surfaces. Do you know if the 1950s artist your friend mentioned was working with soft glass or borosilicate?
 
Snodgrass gets way too much credit, he popularized silver fuming, sure, but plenty of earlier artists were experimenting with metal oxides...history just forgets the ones who didn't self-promote

yeah, you know, Bob Snodgrass popularized and perfected silver fuming, making it accessible to many, but the underlying concept of using fumed metals is much older.
The history of dichroic glass, for example, involves a lot of trial and error with metal oxides in a vacuum, with the technology really taking off in the 1960s and 70s. It's likely a lot of people were experimenting with similar concepts around the same time.
