Lathe chuck extension is aluminum

I have a Wales/Heathway lathe and noticed the chuck extension is made out of aluminum. Is this just to save weight? I would've thought stainless made more sense for strength and longevity.
 
Stainless steel seems like it would be the obvious choice but it's often a combination of factors.
Weight saving is definitely one but also, aluminum is significantly easier and cheaper to machine than stainless.
For the typical forces on a chuck extension, it usually provides sufficient strength and it's less prone to rust than some steels!
As long as you're not pushing the lathe beyond its intended capabilities, it generally holds up fine!

absolutely right. aluminum for a chuck extension might seem counter intuitive for strength, but it's almost certainly all about saving weight, especially for rotational dynamics
 
I came across a similar issue years back when I found an old jeweler's lathe. It turned out that the aluminum chuck sleeve was there for balance and to make speed adjustments easier. It never really caused me any problems during normal use
